As a manager or supervisor you have an important role to play in assisting new employees to gain familiarity with their work environment and acquire a sense of belonging that will build commitment to the University. While each Office has particular needs that will shape staff induction practices, the guidelines provide an overview of key issues and essential stages of an effective induction process.

Strategic oversight of Research and Commercialisation at QUT |
The DVC (R&C) sponsors the top-level Research and Innovation Plan. This includes development, review and annual reporting against the plan’s objectives. This strategic oversight requires engagement with local, national and international partners and funding agencies. |

Representation of QUT on external boards and management committees. |
The DVC (R&C) represents QUT on a number of external Boards and Management Committees. The DVC (R&C) also Chairs a number of QUT Committees and is responsible for updating, reviewing and communicating policies relevant to the DVC (R&C) portfolio. DVC Office staff represent the Division on university-wide working parties and steering groups. |

Financial Management of Research and External Services Program Budget |
The DVC Office coordinates the budget development and reforecast of the University’s Research and External Services Program, including the University Research Budget (URB). This involves liaisons with representatives from the Division of Administrative Services, Division of International and Development, Division of Finance & Resource Planning as well as Faculties and Research Institutes. |

Financial Management of Divisional Budget |
The DVC Office prepares, monitors and undertakes regular reviews of the Division’s entire budget. This includes liaising with Office Directors and the Dean of Graduate Studies to ensure that Office expenditure remains within budget. |

Management and support of Divisional Information Technology |
The DVC Office provides information technology support for all Divisional staff, including some IHBI staff. This includes the provision of advice for data management and storage, monitoring IT-related risks of the Division and providing desktop support for all users. |

Management and oversight of University Research Institutes |
All four University Research Institutes i.e. IHBI, iCi, ISI and ISR all report to the DVC (R&C). The Division provides high-level support across the Institutes to support strategic and financial planning, compliance with QUT policies and processes, and monitoring of Institute performance against KPIs. |

Consolidation of Divisional-wide requests for information |
The DVC Office liaises with Directors and the Dean, Graduate Studies in the preparation of divisional responses to Corporate Reviews, submissions for university committees, and responses to university wide policies and their impact. |

Enrolment & Orientation |
The RSC is a key source of advice and information to research students wanting to enrol and the processes to accomplish this. The RSC supports the admission and enrolment of research students and deals with any issues relating to these processes. The RSC co-ordinates and runs a university wide orientation for postgraduate research degree students and International students at the beginnings of Semesters 1 and 2. These are widely advertised. |

Candidature & Student Concerns |
The RSC provides advice, guidance and information on all matters relating to the candidature of research degree students, including Annual Progress Reports, confirmation of candidature, extension of candidature, and other administrative processes. The RSC is also a point of contact for any issues that may arise during the student’s candidature. |

Scholarships & Grants |
The RSC provides advice and information to staff and prospective students on scholarships available to postgraduate research students. In addition to administering the living stipend and top-up scholarships, the RSC also makes available scholarships to assist students in their studies for example the write-up scholarship. Travel grants oversighted by the RSC, but are administered at Faculty level. |

Examinations |
The RSC provides administrative advice and direction to internal and external examiners and to the higher research degree student in the examination process including deadlines, forms to be filled out, liaising with internal and external examiners and ensuring that the students provide all necessary paperwork and in the correct format for examination. |

Student Feedback |
The RSC is concerned with ensuring that postgraduate research students have a positive and productive experience while undertaking their degree. We conduct surveys which concentrate on a cross section of areas in order to provide a more professional, efficient, relevant and targeted service. |

Student Skill Development |
The RSC provides a number of dedicated seminars and workshops for postgraduate research students to aid in developing and honing their skills in a variety of areas including thesis writing, research methodology and employability skills. We endeavour to target areas of greatest need and offer the training regularly at the most convenient times. |

Supervisor Development |
The RSC promotes and co-ordinates the ongoing development of supervisors in accordance with the supervisor accreditation process which has been implemented by QUT. It establishes a base line of qualifications for supervision across the University and acknowledges the continuing involvement of supervisors in Research Training. Supervisors are invited to use online resources and modules and the Quality in Postgraduate Supervision (QIPS) seminars that are held during the year. |
